Opening Comments

8:15 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. CDT

Blood & Guts: Stupid Kills!
Stuart Mitchell, Ph.D., PestWest USA LLC

Stupid can get you killed! A safe, healthy workplace takes teamwork. To keep the workplace safe, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets safety and health standards. Pest control operators follow OSHA regulations, provide pest management professionals with information, equipment, training, and procedures to avoid job related injuries and illnesses. It is the PMPs responsibility to follow the rules set by the employer and to do their part in preventing accidents. After all, blood and guts, stupid kills!

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. CDT

Rodent Pest Management (RPM)
Stuart Mitchell, Ph.D., PestWest USA LLC

With real smarts, pesky rodent pilferers are more and more problematic for pest management professionals (PMPs). Pesky rodent presence is a symptom of a deficiency. As rodents and rodent smarts exploit any deficiency, populations can explode, threatening public health, food, and structures. To out-smart rodent smarts, and as an essential part of RPM, the rapidly advancing technologies of remote sensing are providing pest management professionals with a plethora of pest presence devices. From smart devices to artificial intelligence, smart traps can now “talk.” Time to have a conversation!

10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. CDT

Pesky Flies: Stopping A Restaurant From Becoming A “Pestaurant!”
Stuart Mitchell, Ph.D., PestWest USA LLC

After visiting dead animals, feces, manure, raw garbage, sewers, floor drains, and biofilms, filth-flying infections enter restaurants and regurgitate digestive fluids, defecate, and shed bodily particles where they feed and rest. Filth flies contaminate food storages, food preparation surfaces, food handling, food utensils, foods served, and foods consumed by customers. As a result, filth flies contaminate health inspections, customer presence, social media reviews, reputations, revenue, and convert restaurants into “pestaurants!”
